Dear UTLA/AFT 1021 Member,
You are a UTLA member who chose the California Federation of Teachers (CFT) as your State affiliate union and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), a member of the AFL-CIO, as your National affiliate. Your Local is AFT 1021.
The next AFT 1021 General Membership meeting will be on Thursday, January 24, 2013. It will be held at UTLA from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the auditorium (2nd floor). Snacks will be provided and free parking is available behind the UTLA building on Berendo.
On Thursday, January 24th, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. in the UTLA auditorium you will meet your Executive Board and we will be voting on delegates to the State Conventions as well as proposing motions for policy and actions of those bodies. Our members are able to help shape policy for the CFT and AFT by first adopting motions at the general membership meetings. In order to more accurately represent the views of Local 1021 members, the Executive Board has initiated procedures for adopting motions at general membership meetings:
1. All motions must be submitted to UTLA/AFT 1021 four weeks prior to the general membership meetings. Motions can be sent to AFT 1021 President, via fax 213-251-9891; sent hard copy to 3303 Wilshire Blvd. 10th Floor, Los Angeles, CA. 90010 or emailed. (please indicate AFT 1021 motion in the subject line)
2. Motions submitted prior to the meeting will be sent out to the entire 1021 membership and posted on the UTLA/ AFT 1021 website link at least two weeks prior to the meeting.
3. There must be a quorum of 35 active members at the meeting for motions to be voted on and adopted.
4. Emergency motions may be raised at the general membership meetings but can only be heard with the approval of 2/3rd vote of the body with the stipulation that there is a quorum present (35 active members).
We believe these procedures will encourage greater participation by giving members advance notice of motions while helping to ensure that motions accurately reflect the sentiment of members by establishing a quorum for their adoption.
Topics at this General Membership meeting will also be a report on the November ballot measures and other AFT projects and efforts.
