AFT 1021 General Membership MeetingDear AFT members, I hope that you have received my letter introducing you to AFT 1021 (If you did not, please call the UTLA membership department at (213) 637-5144 to verify your home address in our database). I want to remind you about our first general membership meeting on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at 6:00 PM in the UTLA Auditorium on the second floor. The address is 3303 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles, 90010. Please park in the parking structure directly behind our building. You will be able to meet your new AFT Officers and Board members there. There will be a presentation then for all UTLA members by Rick Jacobs from the Courage Campaign. This organizing network of diverse organizations (including CFT and CTA and other labor, grassroots and community based organizations) supports actions that push for progressive change (including funding restructuring) and full equality in California. You will hear about their successful and ongoing campaigns and alliances as well as future goals for fundamental reforms. Joshua Pechthalt, newly elected CFT President, will also speak to the direction that our State affiliate will be moving in the next years to support building power and making change. At this general membership meeting, we will also hold the CFT and AFT conventions election of the active AFT 1021 members who returned the self-nomination forms in the UT by the October 13th deadline time. There should be no nominations from the floor because of this deadline. Below are links to the list of the candidates names that will be on the ballot and every 1021 member will be able to vote for the 35 delegates to both the CFT Convention in San Jose, April 13-15 and the AFT Convention in Detroit, July 27-30. I welcome your suggestions about how to make Local 1021 a dynamic force within UTLA and look forward to seeing you at all our general membership meetings this year (February 23 and May 10, also). I am also able to come to your school and talk to your teachers about UTLA as well as listen to your concerns. I can be reached at (213) 447-5860 and emailed at bforrester@utla.net.
