  American Federation of Teachers

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) was founded in 1916 to represent the economic, social, and professional interests of classroom teachers. It is an affiliated international union of the AFL-CIO. The AFT has more than 3,000 local affiliates nationwide, 43 state affiliates, and more than 1.3 million members.

In non-convention years, the AFT hosts the Quality Educational Standards in Teaching (QuEST) conference, a professional issues meeting that attracts nearly 3,000 educators from around the country. AFT's healthcare, higher education, public employee and paraprofessionals and school-related personnel (PSRP) divisions also host yearly professional issues conferences.

 
  Calfornia Teachers Association The California Teachers Association (CTA) is California's largest professional employee organization, representing more than 340,000 public school teachers, counselors, psychologists, librarians, other non-supervisory certificated personnel, and education support professionals (ESPs). CTA is affiliated with the 2.8 million-member National Education Association (NEA).

  Teaching to Change LA Teaching to Change LA (TCLA) is an online journal that addresses educational conditions in Los Angeles schools. K-12 students, parents, teachers, guest contributors, and researchers provide the content for the journal, which is published by UCLA/IDEA several times a year with weekly updates. Journal readers include those who learn and teach in Los Angeles schools, local and state policymakers and legislators, and readers from across the country.  
  CA Virtual Campus The California Virtual Campus Course Catalog provides a listing of more than 5,000 distance courses offered by accredited institutions in California. You can search the catalog in a wide variety of ways. In addition, other resources are available for students, including information on financial aid. The CVC Professional Development Center website is a training and staff development portal for the CVC project. The Professional Development Center, in cooperation with other California projects, provides training, course hosting and other resources for faculty and staff developing online courses.  
  Neighborhood Councils The vision of a citywide system of independent and influential neighborhood councils, and the creation of a city department to guide that process, was the centerpiece of the new City Charter that was approved by the voters in June 1999.  
  Public Education Network Public Education Network (PEN) is a national association of local education funds (LEFs) and individuals working to advance public school reform in low-income communities across our country. PEN believes an active, vocal constituency is the key to ensuring that every child, in every community, benefits from a quality public education.  
  Refdesk Since 1995, Refdesk is a free and family-friendly web site that indexes and reviews quality, credible, and current web-based resources.

  California Department of Education The California Department of Education (CDE) oversees the state's diverse and dynamic public school system that is responsible for the education of more than seven million children and young adults in more than 9,000 schools. The CDE and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction are responsible for enforcing education law and regulations; and for continuing to reform and improve public elementary school programs, secondary school programs, adult education, some preschool programs, and child care programs.  
  LA Youth When Los Angeles teens read L.A. Youth, the newspaper by and about teens, they say, "I relate to it." Since it started publishing student journalism in 1988, the paper has helped thousands of teachers make their classrooms more relevant, interesting places to learn by publishing the first-hand accounts of teens' experiences with college stress, racial identity, homophobia, censorship, broken families and many more topics.  
  State Teachers Retirement System The California State Teachers’ Retirement System is the second largest public pension plan and the largest teachers’ retirement fund in the United States. CalSTRS had a total membership of nearly 800,000 and assets of $162.2 billion as of March 31, 2007. CalSTRS’ primary responsibility is to provide retirement-related benefits and services to teachers in public schools from kindergarten through community college.  
  STRS Compares 403(b) Plans The 403bCompare Web site is a bank of free objective information about 403(b) vendors and the products they offer. This site was created to help employees of California's local school districts, community college districts or county offices of education make better-informed investment decisions.  
  Union-Sponsored Scholarships This database describes more than $4 million in scholarships, with details about eligibility, application deadlines and contact information. Although it cannot track all of the scholarships available through the almost 38,000 local unions in the United States, it does include the major scholarship programs and is a good place to start a search for financial aid for higher education.  
  internet4classrooms In 1997 Susan Brooks and Bill Byles began a collaborative effort to extend assistance to fellow teachers. In November of 2000 that project expanded to a web presence known as Internet4Classrooms (i4c), free to anyone who wants to find high-quality, free Internet resources to use in their classroom instruction.
