Alex Caputo-Pearl talks about the leaked charter plan to expand in Los Angeles, which will be primarily funded by philanthropist Eli Broad on KCRW Which Way Los Angeles, 89.9 radio show , Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015.
While we recognize the contribution that Eli Broad has made to the arts scene in L.A. with his new museum, we also know that Broad has unveiled a plan to dismantle public education in Los Angeles, by moving 50 percent of our students into unregulated charter schools.
“Deregulation has not worked in our economy, has not worked in health care and has not worked in housing, and it is not going to work in public education,” said UTLA President Alex Caputo-Pearl at a news conference on Sunday, Sept. 20, following a march in front of the new museum.
Caputo-Pearl has challenged Eli Broad to a public debate over the future of public education in Los Angeles and Broad has yet to respond. On Sunday, we took the challenge to his museum doorstep, but we’re just getting started.
