Injunction denied!

June 6 goes forward as planned

Today, the Public Employees Relations Board (PERB) turned down LAUSD’s request to go to court to prohibit UTLA from taking our June 6 action. While PERB did say it will issue an administrative complaint against UTLA (which we haven’t yet received), this decision means that there will be no court order stopping our action on Friday.

One hour’s pay for the kids of L.A.
The stakes couldn’t be higher right now. We need to make it clear that cuts to our schools and our communities will hurt our students. LAUSD is trying to scare parents by calling this a walkout. It is not a walkout. Instead, before going inside school, we will be protesting in front for the first hour.

Fight salary cuts and layoffs
Teacher layoffs and cuts to salaries and benefits are coming unless we do something to stop them. Last month, the School Board passed a motion opening the door to reductions in salary and benefits for employees for the 2008-2009 school year.

And now, after Superintendent Brewer said publically there’d be no teacher layoffs, the District’s chief operating officer admitted to the press that there definitely will be layoffs of probationary teachers if the state budget cuts go through. Now is the time to fight—before this budget is a done deal!

Focus on student safety
Chapter chairs should be working with principals to finalize their one-hour safety plan to ensure the security of our students. Classified employees can be a part of the safety process.

Join the fight on June 6 to ensure that our schools get the kind of
funding they deserve. Let’s make the 6th a great day for the kids of L.A.!
