Nov. 17, 2009: A.J. Duffy discusses School Reform and Letters of Intent with Warren Olney (Which Way LA-KCRW FM 89.9)In August, Los Angeles' elected school board voted to open up certain existing schools (chosen from from specific criteria)and new schools to outside control. The process has started, and yesterday was the deadline for applications to run 12 existing schools and 24 news schools. Dozens of groups submitted proposals, including a team composed of the teachers' union and school district staff, charter schools, and and other organizations. Warren Olney speaks with A.J.Duffy (UTLA President), Jed Wallace( President, California Charter Schools Association ) and Howard Blume (Los Angeles Times reporter) about these issues. Duffy was interviewed while arriving at a press conference at Hillcrest Elementary School where teachers, school staff, students, alumni, and supporting nearby schools stood together to plan for the future of their school.
