Outraged by District’s Plan, Fremont Teachers and Parents Demand True Reform Instead of Chaos that Will Hurt StudentsFremont High School Community Locked Out of District’s “Restructuring” Agenda February 25, 2010 – On Friday, February 26, parents, teachers, students, and community will hold a press conference at Fremont High School to voice their strong objection to Superintendent Cortines’ plan to “restructure” Fremont High. Teachers and parents are concerned that the Superintendent’s plan would set back their own efforts for positive reform and would hurt rather than improve the academic program at Fremont. “The superintendent’s plan would wipe out our current work to fix the school,” asserts Patty Gonzalez, student council president of Fremont High. The restructure was announced in December 2009 and calls for all teachers to be fired at the end of the school year. The teachers will have to reapply for their jobs and they may or may not be rehired. Parents and teachers feel that if the District refuses to allow them to take part in the restructuring of the school it will drive most of the best teachers and staff away. “Cortines has locked out families and everyone working at the school,” says Noehmi Garcia, a biology teacher. “He and his people have kept families and staff in the dark about next year and they refuse to allow us to participate in the plan.” The press conference will update the progress of the fight and plans moving forward.
