Teachers, parents and the community take multiple actions on Friday, February 19 to “Take a Stand Together” for our Schools.February 18, 2010 – On Friday, February 19, teachers, parents, and students from multiple schools will be holding actions to bring school concerns to the community and ask for support. In a central Los Angeles action, between 4:00pm-6:00pm, teachers, parents, and students from local elementary, middle and high schools will march down Central Avenue to a rally at the corner of Central Avenue & 43rd Street. Participating schools will be Jefferson High School (“HS”), Carver Middle School, Ascot Elementary School(“ES”), Wadsworth ES, Harmony ES, Aurora ES, Main Street ES, 49th Street ES, Nevin ES, Vernon City ES, 28th Street ES, Hope Street ES, Santee HS , 61st Street ES and more. Participants in the central action will ask parents and community members to “Take a Stand for our Schools” to support increased school funding and local control of schools and to fight against debilitating budget cuts and school giveaways. In an east Los Angeles action, beginning at 4:00 pm, teachers, parent and students from Garfield HS, Belvedere MS, and other neighboring schools will hold a candlelight vigil and rally in front of Esteban Torres HS (corner of East Cesar Chavez Avenue and Marianna Avenue). The community around Esteban Torres HS has spoken loud & clear about school choice. They are demanding that the LAUSD School Board respect the overwhelming sentiment of the community, parents, students and teachers and not give Esteban Torres HS away to outsiders. “We are encouraging everyone to take a stand for our schools and to tell the Los Angeles Unified School District, state, and federal government that we demand a quality education for our students and that we expect their assistance,” said A.J.
