UTLA Scholarships

UTLA funds a variety of scholarships each year for deserving students.

Christa McAuliffe Scholarship
Christa McAuliffe, teacher-astronaut of the Challenger crew, symbolizes the dedication of educators to America. To commemorate her pioneering spirit, UTLA established the Christa McAuliffe Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarships assist students in continuing their studies, increasing their knowledge and expanding their abilities.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship
Each spring the UTLA African American Education Committee celebrates the life of the civil rights legend by offering a scholarship to LAUSD students in grade K-12. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. scholarship awards are given to LAUSD students who desire to “keep the dream alive” by continuing their education past their high school career.

Ruben Salazar Scholarship
The Ruben Salazar Scholarship gives funds to students in the name of Ruben Salazar, an award-winning journalist who wrote extensively on the plight of Spanish-speaking Americans in the U.A. The Los Angeles Times journalist was killed in 1970 by police while covering the demonstration and ensuing riot during the Chicano Moratorium against the War in Vietnam.

Stonewall Scholarship
This scholarship helps gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students enhance their self-esteem and stay in school. It also helps educate non-gay youth to be more accepting of their peers. The name “Stonewall” comes from the Stonewall Rebellion, a key event in the GLBT civil rights movement. The UTLA Stonewall scholarship provides financial assistance to deserving LAUSD high school students of all sexual orientations to further their educational goals.
