Reduction In Force (RIF) Information

nolayoffsFor the past three years, LAUSD has issued an excessively large number of RIFs in March—numbers far beyond what is needed to address the drop in enrollment and economic uncertainty. Eventually, the vast majority of RIF'd members have been brought back—but only after they have suffered months of stress and uncertainty.

The drawn-out RIF process also severely destabilizes schools and inflicts unnecessary turmoil on students while costing millions of dollars to implement. LAUSD issued a "full crisis" budget last month that, if followed, would trigger more than 5,000 RIF notices to certificated staff. It is clear that layoffs on that level will never happen—our schools could not survive cuts of that magnitude. UTLA is fighting to protect our members and protect our schools by preventing the excessive issuance of RIFs.
