Organizing for the Schools LA Students Deserve

UTLA members have overwhelmingly ratified the healthcare agreement, with 99% of members voting yes.

We fought hard for this agreement at the bargaining table and through our organizing. Now we escalate our fight for a fair contract for the Schools LA Students Deserve. The recent school tragedies bring renewed urgency to achieving our demands. School safety is interwoven in many of our bargaining proposals — demands around critical student support staffing, effective student discipline, parents and educator decision making, Community Schools, special education caseloads, student rights and support, and more. Through our bargaining proposals and our organizing with parents across the city, we can make our schools safer places to work and learn.

Voting took place February 8 to 15 at schools and work sites, and ballots were counted at the UTLA building Friday, Feb. 16. The LAUSD School Board approved the agreement on a 4-2 vote on February 13. The agreement will not be ratified officially until all LAUSD employee unions have conducted their member votes.

Comprised of representatives from all eight LAUSD labor unions, the three-year agreement was reached on Jan. 18, 2018 and includes:

  • Preservation of all current healthcare plans, at no additional costs to members
  • No two-tier system with lower benefits for new employees
  • A guaranteed reserve to help pay for cost increases beyond 2020
