UTLA strongly supports Scott Schmerelson’s motion, to be heard at the Aug. 21 LAUSD Board of Education meeting, calling for Board approval of Jackie Goldberg as the interim appointment for the vacated Board District 5 seat. She has stated clearly that she will not run for the seat in an election.

UTLA Statement in Support of Jackie Goldberg for BD5
Jackie Goldberg

Goldberg has a long and storied history of fighting for students, standing with educators, and partnering with parents in the ongoing struggle for public education. After a long career as a classroom teacher, she served two terms on the LAUSD School Board, two terms on the LA City Council, and three terms in the California State Assembly, where she led an effort to expand the scope of bargaining for teacher unions to include curriculum and textbooks.

Since leaving public office, Goldberg has been a relentless leader and tireless organizer in community-based efforts to increase sensible regulation of charter schools and prevent the privatization of LAUSD. She has been an unapologetic voice for the role of LAUSD as an essential civic institution in our city.
The BOE will also be discussing the timing of an election, including a likely motion by Board President Monica Garcia and Board Vice-President Nick Melvoin for a March election. It remains unclear, however, when an election will happen. What we do know at this point is that it won’t be in November, because Garcia, Melvoin, and their billionaire benefactors wanted to keep Ref Rodriguez on the Board long enough to hire the unqualified Austin Beutner as LAUSD Superintendent. This made it impossible to conduct the election in November.
Therefore, UTLA is in support of Schmerelson’s motion for the interim appointment of Jackie Goldberg to fill the BD5 vacancy.
